Window, level, gamma and invert

Choose which part of the grey range fills the screen, and adjust contrast and polarity.

DR images hold far more grey levels than a screen can show. The window decides which part of that range is spread from black to white. Open the Adjust panel to find these controls under Window.

  • Level (centre) moves the window up or down the grey range.
  • Width sets how much of the range is shown. Narrower gives more contrast.
  • The small histogram above the sliders shows where the image’s values are and where the window sits.
  • Auto resets the window to the image’s own range.
  • From ROI sets the window from a box you have drawn with the ROI statistics tool (key 5), which is the quickest way to get good contrast on the area that matters.
  • Invert (key i) swaps light and dark.
  • Gamma bends the grey curve to lift shadows or highlights.

Double-click any slider to set it back to zero. Nothing you change here alters the stored image.

For two very different densities in one image, such as thin and thick sections, use Dual window (see Advanced processing).
